Days of
Sakha Yakutia Culture 2012
Included on
UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in need of
urgent safeguarding, Olonkho is a striking exemplar of the oldest epic
arts of the Turkic people called Sakha.
Collection
of narrative tales, traditional Olonkho is a mix of one-man singing,
reciting and acting that may last for hours and sometimes even days,
depending on finesse and improvisation skills of the performer. While
entertaining for the audience, Olonkho also reveals Sakha people’s
ancient mythology according to which the universe represents three
kingdoms connected by a huge tree, - Upper (higher branches), Medial
(trunk and lower branches) and Underworld (roots), - where deities, good
and evil spirits, warriors of supernatural powers, mortal humans and
talking animals co-exist, interact and fiercely compete creating
constant drama and passion. This year’s Days of Sakha Culture will
feature Olonkho as the main peg to hang things on, - from masterfully
executed mammoth tusk carved miniatures and stunning silver jewellery
pieces to captivating paintings and etchings to please your visual
senses, continued with live music performance for the acoustic delight,
to finish up savouring traditional dishes, - all that to present you
with unique experience of Sakha culture and its refreshing originality.
Days of Sakha
Yakutia Culture will be held for the second time in Toronto from the 15th
to the 30th of September, and just like the last year, it is
officially a part of Culture Days in Toronto
